What’s Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer, also known as colon or rectal cancer, can originate in either the colon or rectum, and may be called colon or rectal cancer. Together, they make up 95 percent of all colorectal cancer cases. These cancers often begin as polyps inside the lining of the large intestine (colon) or at the end of the colon (rectum).
Detecting Colon Cancer
If you suspect you have symptoms of colorectal cancer, tell your doctor immediately so that you can receive diagnostic tests, including:
- Colonoscopy – Allows your doctor to see polyps or other digestive health conditions
- Biopsy – Removes a small piece of tissue to examine under a microscope
- Imaging tests like CT or MRI scans – Discovers colon cancer before symptoms appear
